Optimal preparation – clarify individually with your treating specialist
Every spiroergometry test should be carefully prepared – especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. Your treating physician will discuss with you which measures are appropriate for you. Here are some common recommendations for guidance:
✅ Patient Preparation for a Spiroergometry Test
1. General Information (1–3 days before)
-
Explain the purpose and procedure of the test (exercise test, breathing mask, bicycle ergometer).
-
Duration: approx. 30–45 minutes including preparation.
-
Patient autonomy: Participation is voluntary; the test can be stopped at any time.
-
Mask warning: May cause a sense of tightness – prepare accordingly if the patient has anxiety disorders.
2. Medication Preparation
Discuss with the treating physician:
-
Beta blockers or antihypertensives: may be paused if medically appropriate.
-
Inhaled medications (COPD, asthma): should not be taken immediately beforehand unless specifically advised.
-
Patients with diabetes: Blood sugar management should be clarified in advance.
3. On the Day of the Examination
-
Eat a light meal up to 2 hours before the test – avoid large meals.
-
No coffee or nicotine for at least 4 hours prior (can influence heart and respiratory rate).
-
Avoid intense physical activity earlier that day.
-
Wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes (cycling shorts recommended for longer protocols).
-
Bring personal medications and allergy ID card, if applicable.
4. Special Notes for High-Risk Patients
-
For cardiac conditions: bring recent ECGs, reports, and medication list.
-
For pulmonary conditions: have recent lung function test results or reports available.
-
Active infections (cough, fever): test should be postponed.
5. After the Examination
-
Allow for a recovery period of about 10–15 minutes.
-
If symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or shortness of breath occur, inform the supervising medical staff immediately.
🔎 Special Consideration: Pathological Conditions
Patients with the following diagnoses may require additional clarification or supervision:
-
Severe heart failure (NYHA III/IV)
-
Uncontrolled hypertension (>180/110 mmHg)
-
Unstable angina pectoris
-
Neurological impairments (e.g. coordination, balance)
-
Exercise-induced arrhythmias
-
Active infections or recent surgeries
Recommendation: A prior risk assessment and, if necessary, written consent from the treating physician should be obtained.
